Before you start … what should you ask yourself?

I make my living advising companies how to build their ecommerce sites. Let me share with you what I need to know from them before I can even start to do that. It’s a set of questions you can very usefully ask yourself if you want to be successful in the business of selling online.

QUESTION ONE - What exactly do you want the site to do for you? Draw attention to you? Or sell lots of stuff?

Believe it or not, some companies are more interested in getting attention (increasing brand awareness, they sometimes call it) than in making actual sales. Such companies would be happy to settle for getting lots of traffic to their site. But I hope that you’ll want that magic concept of high “conversion” – a large proportion of visitors who stay and make a purchase.

QUESTION TWO

Who is your primary target audience and who is your secondary target audience?

This is an important distinction – and it’s a revealing question, not least for showing everybody connected with the enterprise how many different kinds of people do visit a site. The primary audience is of course the people from whom you expect to get the greatest rate of conversion – those who actually buy. The secondary audience is simply everyone else, from curious passers-by to prospective investors, partners and employees (and also, of course, existing customers, partners, investors and employees).

Then you can concentrate on the primary audience, without ever totally forgetting the secondary one. Who is the typical primary audience member – what are their age, gender, occupation, income level, and purchasing habits? What do they generally use the web for?

QUESTION THREE

What exactly are you offering the audience that’s distinctive?

What is it about your product that would make your audience choose it, above your competitors’ products? Is it the cost, quality, value, service, or what? This is important, because it determines just what aspects you’ll emphasize on your site.

It’s a good idea to include this challenge to yourself, as well. If your target audience wouldn’t purchase on your site, which site would she or he go to? And for that matter, if YOU would buy at other sites, where would that be? It might be worth copying, or at least learning from, what has attracted you there.

There are many more questions I could ask clients of course, and I do … but these three are a very useful starting point, and they’ll give you a basis for choosing what designs and functions to concentrate on when you start a new site, or begin improving your existing one.

808s & Heartbreak

is amazing dark 80’s sad still I couldn’t stop looping it for the last month or so. I am not going to start reviewing song by song but the first 3 are amazing try it out if you like depeche mode and nick cave and joy division sounds familiar to you.

My latest fix is “The Notwist” I just bought 2 of their albums “Shrink” (1998) and “The Devil, You + Me” (2008).

Shrink - you know the feeling of discovering an amazing album long time after it is out (11 years!) and you think to yourself all this time that i could have listen to this album damm, but anyway here I am with telling you about this album and I know that the word on the street is Chemical is the song (anyway on last.fm it got more downloads) my favorite is Electric Bear. let’s get it straight this is a cult classic album alt-rock-electronic with some jazz splashes (me no big on jazz when ever i here it i look for the floor buttons)

The Devil, You + Me - another great album this time I get to listen to it very close to release year ( i also happen to see the tour for this album which was great though to see it now it will probably blow my mind) I think it is a great album my favorite song on this album is On Planet Off which remained me very much my favorite band The Gog Machine, another great songs is Good Lies, Where In This World. Definitely a master piece.

Not a review but if you like post rock Mogwai Pram Mono you might want to check out Pelican album “The Fire In Our Throats Will Beckon The Thaw” the first song “Last Day Of Winter” is really really good (the whole album is great)

Writing this article I was listening to “The Bad Plus” let’s see if they make it into another post.

I am starting this blog with what will be a very important decision you have to make very early in the path to building a successful business online. the domain name important or not question been going on for a long time but if you missed it I will make it clear:

DOMAIN DOES MATTER the size of the domain doesn’t!

so now that I got it out of my system let me give you some more information:

  • lets take “baby sling” if you own the domain www.babysling.com (yes i own it) it is easier to get ranking for this specific keywords then any other domain. it is already well known that if you have the exact keywords in your domain name (ideally the exact keyword(s) is the exact domain) it will make it easy to get ranking. I can give you a lot of examples for that among clients that I work with are some premium domain name such as www.diamonds.com www.eyeglasses.com among site that I own are www.babysling.com www.newyorkgeneralcontractor.com and the list goes on… though I think you got the point.
  • A premium domain name is easily brand able think about putting a billboard for baby sling on the side of the road and the URL is www.TheSlingStation.com or a site with www.babysling.com which one you will remember when you get back home.
  • Also if you have this a domain that match your targeted keywords and you populate it with the right content (this will be a whole different subject that will come down the road) you will be come an authority on the subject. it is posibble to become an authority on a subject without the exact keywords in your domain but it is a lot more work and seniority.
